A leading commander of Mozambique’s liberation struggle, Machel joined FRELIMO, received military training, rose through its liberation command and became its leader after the assassination of Eduardo Mondlane. He led the decisive phase of the struggle that culminated in Mozambique's independence on 25 June 1975 and subsequently became the country's first President.
