Africa’s history is a story of courage, sacrifice, resilience and collective determination.

Across the continent, generations of Africans fought for freedom, dignity, self-determination and the right to shape their own future. From the struggles against colonialism and apartheid to the broader pursuit of African unity and development, this history was shaped by leaders, communities, intellectuals, artists, freedom fighters and ordinary citizens who refused to accept a future defined by oppression.

Among the most influential figures of this history was Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, whose vision extended beyond Tanzania’s independence to the liberation and unity of Africa.

Under his leadership, Tanzania became an important centre of support for liberation movements across Southern Africa. But Nyerere’s legacy was not limited to political liberation. His ideas on African unity, human dignity, self-reliance, social justice and peaceful cooperation continue to provide important lessons for today’s generation.

It is from this wider legacy that JUKANYE International Festival draws its inspiration.

JUKANYE seeks to create a space where Africa can remember its past while actively shaping its future.

Through exhibitions, documentaries, cultural performances, historical tours, conferences, youth programmes, innovation showcases, entrepreneurship, environmental initiatives and the recognition of outstanding African leaders and changemakers, the festival connects history with contemporary African priorities.

The festival particularly seeks to give young Africans an opportunity to ask an important question:

What will we do with the freedom and opportunities inherited from those who came before us?

The answer cannot simply be found in remembering history. It must also be found in innovation, entrepreneurship, education, culture, technology, environmental responsibility, social inclusion and African cooperation.
