Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the founding father of Tanzania and a pioneering Pan-Africanist who led Tanganyika to independence in 1961. He championed African liberation, supporting freedom movements across Southern Africa and opposing colonialism, racism and apartheid. A founding architect of African unity, he played a key role in the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), the forerunner of today’s African Union. His legacy of freedom, unity, justice, peace and human dignity continues to inspire generations across Africa and beyond.
